Well, we’ve finally finished our first round of Hunter Discussion!
We had quite a few people there, and I decided that we should just let everyone talk if they wanted, so long as we weren’t being pushy.
Bear with us – this is our first discussion. =) We talk about glyphs, mana efficiency, Wild Quiver, Improved Steady Shot, and a few other things, including our plans for the new dual-speccing ability.
We did the recording through Ventrilo, so lots of people sound like they’re underwater or have crazy-sounding lisps. I guarantee we all sound perfectly normal IRL. We got an interesting group of people, too : four different accents! Totally awesome. I really enjoyed speaking with all of you! Thanks so much for joining me.
Without further ado, here’s the podcast!

The next hunter discussion will be announced sometime next week. If you liked what you listened to today and think you may want to participate, just send me an email at Dairina321@gmail.com or leave a comment with your email address.

<Explicit> cleared all of Naxx last night and ended right on time. This is our first full clear in just one raid night. DPS was off the wall, healing was great as always…but our poor tanks. Our poor little tanks were getting pissed. All night, we heard -
“BACK UP! GAWD!”
“Relax, guys!”
“Seriously, you need to wait.”
“Fine, then – you can all die for all I care.”
“I haven’t even hit the mob yet.”
“DPS SLOW DOWN!”
Sorry, Jailer. I guess we were a little excited. But hey, we did tear the place a new one! I reached a new personal best on Patchwerk (over 4400dps) but am still getting beat by Survival by a bit. I’m very excited by the upcoming MM talent change, though, and I think the new Piercing Shots will bridge the gap between MM and Survival, or at least come close. I’m also hoping they add a bit more umph to BM, just to make things interesting.
I probably could’ve performed a bit better had I not been talking to everyone during the fights. But Naxx is the new Kara, and it’s just too boring if you don’t keep yourself occupied. I really want that new content to come soon. And I really hope it’s more of a challenge – I want to spend almost as much time on each boss as we spent with Malygos. I want the victories to be really rewarding. And I want to see some new things!
Jailer, I promise I’ll slow down a bit. Now that I’ve tanked (once, as ret) on my paly, I know a little of what it’s like to have outrageous DPS-tards ruining your threat…you know…LIKE YOU, YOU BASTARD! <3 Yeah, taste it. How does it taste? Tastes gooooood.

In all the hubbub of Patch 3.0.8, many hunters have swapped over to the new Survival. While I don’t have an issue with this, I would like to say that you must expect a learning curve with it. Unless you’re very quick on the uptake and learn new strats like Speedy Gonzalas, don’t expect instant results. If you’re going to switch specs, stick with it until you see generous improvement.
If you ARE Speedy Gonzalas, congratulations! Survival is doing a considerable amount of damage, and as much as I wish MM had gotten buffed, Survival is now in the spotlight. If your ultimate goal is to master the spec which yeilds the most damage available in most situations, Survival is the new BM. One of our MM hunters switched to Survival a few days ago, and has suddenly shot up three or four damage spots on Recount, as well as matches or surpasses my DPS on some bosses. Her gear is minimally better, her computer slower – therefore, her DPS could be surpassing my own by a generous amount with some more practice and a better connection. Perhaps you’ll find that while you didn’t quite grasp MM, you’re very adept at the strats for SV.
If you don’t like the idea of SV, or don’t like change in general, you can still be useful with the other specs. Just don’t expect to be competing for the top of the charts unless the skill and gear of those you play with is lesser than your own. Arcane mages are destroying things like it’s child’s play, Death Knights are still incredibly powerful, and Rogues aren’t to be discredited. But remember – it’s not all about top damage. Do what you enjoy doing, be a joy to have in group, know your strats and techniques, do your best on damage, and you’ll always be a valuable player.
On a lighter note, I got some gear upgrades last night! Betrayer dropped, but it went to our DK. Luckily for me, Journey’s End dropped, too. Not the best, but definitely an upgrade from my Wraith Spear. I also picked up my tier 7.5 chest piece, a slight upgrade from Heroic, but the second-best in slot. Best if you have the 2-piece set bonus, imo. I’d suggest the shoulders and the chest, but the other tier pieces aren’t worth it in my humble opinion.
Last night, <Explicit> one-shotted the remaining bosses in Naxx25 and moved on to our first real Malygos attempts.
First, let me start by saying that we have a great group of talented players, most of whom are respectful, fun, and intelligent. Maturity may be lacking in some cases, but respectfulness tends to outweigh the issues caused by it. That being said, there are still those who struggle with certain issues, be it poor computers, schedule inconsitancies, health problems, or wife aggro. Every dog has his day, but mostly he’s just a dog. And we’re just people, playing this game we love. We can’t run away from bad days, or even bad weeks in which nothing is accomplished. The battlegroup issue was horrendous.
Being able to play again has raised spirits exponentially, and our speedy disposal of Naxx bosses has boosted our confidence. However, sometimes our assessment of skills makes us forget that we are still only as good as our gear permits. Suffice it to say, we must clear Naxx many more times before we’re ready to down Malygos. And now, after the battlegroup issues, we are three weeks behind schedule. What do we say to that? Bring it on. In a few weeks’ time, we’re going to shave that damn beard right off the dragon. Oh, the imagery!

Hunters
Nifty. Makes our lives a little easier.
Perhaps Rabid will now go off automatically? I’ll be testing this, and if it’s the case, it may be a better choice than Heart of the Phoenix if you can control your pet well enough.
Fantastic. Now we won’t run out of mana as quickly! If you were ever not using Arcane because of mana consumption, now’s your chance to start using it, and hopefully put talents into it as well. No changes to Aimed Shot yet, so it will still consume a relatively high amount of mana.
Useful, if only we ever needed it for something…but we’re not the only ones with Nature resist buffs.
Just as it states, it’s all you. Still good enough to continue getting the talent, but others might miss your little buff.
Strictly PvP, unless someone thinks it’s wise to let you evasion-tank something. That someone might not have all his wits intact. But it could be fun.
Doesn’t change anything for MM, but congratulations on your buff, Survivalists. =)
A poor trade for Steady Shot damage if you ask me, but at least now using Arcane Shot is more useful for BM hunters.
This is very nice. It really simplifies the use of these talent points. No more mods or macros, just set your tracking to Humanoids and forget about it. You still can’t get the damage buff if you’re tracking herbs or fish or mines, but you can remember that pretty easily. If you weren’t taking Improved Tracking before, now’s a good time to change, especially with the nerfs on Unleashed Fury, which I’ll discuss below.
This is my favorite part of the changes. Now I don’t have to burn my Readiness for extra Kill Shots unless I’ve got nothing better to do. You’ll see a decent damage increase on longer fights, as tonight I used Kill Shot 4 times on Patchwerk without using Readiness.
Doesn’t apply to MM.
Also doesn’t apply to MM.
=) That’s a tiny smirk. Just a tiny one. Deep down, I feel really bad for you. Deep, deep down.
This is our main nerf. Fortunately, we’re using far fewer Steady Shots in our rotation than the other two specs. Make sure you pick up your Steady Shot glyph (functional now?) and it won’t be too bad for us. Kill Shot crits could make up some of the damage on those longer fights.
Doesn’t apply to MM.
Wording is funky – by “up from 6″ they actually mean that it was 6 in the PTR but was changed to 8, which is a much faster CD than what we had before. I can’t believe I fudged that….fixed.
This makes Nass a sad panda. All the math I did the other day now gets changed, and the damage is not as significant, meaning you’d be better off taking Improved Tracking if you have to choose between the two. The good news is that the changes to Improved Tracking make it much more user-friendly, so I don’t mind switching talents at all.
I have yet to look at the actual percentage, but it simply means that it will be just as useful as you get more mana, instead of it beginning to go stale as your intellect increases. You may find Viper could be useful on more than a few longer battles. Give it a try.
Don’t worry – it sounds awful, but Volley is still a decent AoE spell. I used it tonight, and my crits were hitting for 2300-ish, which, let’s face it, still isn’t half bad. At least we are still allowed a viable AoE, as opposed to our pitiful Volley back in TBC. Be grateful. It could be worse.
Already went over this.
Eidan still managed decent DPS, and this nerf is no reason to scramble around for new pets. They’re simply creating a more equal playing field.
Doesn’t apply to the MM hunters, but grats, BM. =)
On another note, the lag in Naxxramas has been getting worse and worse. Between disconnects, 3-second instant casts, and screen freezes, <Explicit> has been struggling to do anything successfully. This is the third night in a row that we’ve had to take a vote to opt out of raiding due to lag. I’m told it’s a network issue, and that it could take a long time to fix. Blizzard is stating that it’s simply Wintergrasp causing these issues, but many of us have experienced odd lag in the old worlds as well. Until they get this fixed, it will be nearly impossible for me to see how any of these changes REALLY affect our damage. However, do note that Elemental Shamans have been fixed, and fixed well. You may see many of them contending with your hunter damage. I’m glad they’re beginning to fix certain things, but first and foremost, they MUST FIX THIS LAG! Not being able to raid has made me extremely frustrated, and the one fun thing I love doing most in the evenings is now a tiresome struggle instead.
Because of this awful problem, testing certain things will be very uninformative. Until I have time without lag and disconnects, I won’t be running damage tests, and my WWS most likely won’t help much in the way of personal improvement, especially when the person who’s logging us is continually disconnecting himself. I’ll still be writing all I can in my blog, but without actually experiencing certain things, finding new spec changes will be difficult. After the patch, and after recieving enough +Hit gear to get rid of Focused Aim, I’m now testing/running with this spec. This is for my 25-man Naxx and OS runs. Note that I’ve taken Improved Hunter’s Mark in place of Focused Aim – think of it as getting a piece of gear that has 90 attack power on it. However (and if someone knows this for certain, please share your data), I’m not sure whether or not the bonus from Hunter’s Mark is calculated into your 10% bonus from Trueshot Aura. I also want to do some calculations to determine if two of those points are better placed in Survival Tactics than IHM. More to follow.
Good luck with Laggramas, and happy hunting!

**EDIT**
Therefore, yes – Glyph of Steady Shot is now working properly. Please pick it up if you haven’t already, it’s a wonderful Glyph.
You probably knew already, but I just finished my interview with BRK. He may be BM, but he’s okay in my book. Click here to listen!
And let me explain one portion! I didn’t get to explain Combat Experience – it’s all about scaling. The more raid buffs you have, the more beneficial Combat Experience will be. If you have Blessing of Kings, Arcane Intellect, and your TSA, you’re going to see more AP (and even some crit) from Combat Experience than you will from Improved Hunter’s Mark. And it’s two points instead of three! Win Win.
That’s all. It was a TON of fun, BRK is pretty cool (but he talks really fast), and I hope you enjoy the podcast.

Last time we tested three points between Wild Quiver and Piercing Shots. This time, I threw those three points into Improved Hunter’s Mark to see what the difference was. Keeping this spec and testing with and without Improved Hunter’s Mark, I came up with these results:
First Test : No Hunter’s Mark, standard Arcane rotation
Nassira – 1429.8 DPS Eidan – 338.6 DPS Combined – 1768.4 DPS
Second Test : Hunter’s Mark, three open points
Nassira – 1655.2 DPS Eidan – 314.8 DPS Combined – 1970 DPS
Third Test : Hunter’s Mark, three points in Improved HM
Nassira – 1643.9 DPS Eidan – 336 DPS Combined – 1979.9 DPS
So what does this show us? I’ll be honest – the only real information I gathered from these tests was NEVER FORGET TO USE HUNTER’S MARK!
As for the effectiveness of your three talent points in Improved Hunter’s Mark? The changes were insignificant. Those three points can do more damage elsewhere. Putting them into Improved Tracking will most likely net you more damage, although until they change the dummies and make them trackable (please?) I just won’t know for sure. I do know that if you put 5 points into Unleased Fury, your pet, unbuffed, will increase his damage by about 50-70 DPS. That’s not bad! Certainly more significant than Improved Hunter’s Mark. I feel like I just wasted 2 hours of my life. And a lot of gold. But no one can claim my three points should hang in IHM.
Happy Hunting,
<3 Nass
In response to Rilgon’s latest post, I thought I’d add my own words after thinking long on it. “Are we that rare?” he asks. As long as I have been playing this game (which, although not from release, has been quite a long time in game standards), I’ve noticed cliques and personality types that are associated with classes, specs, and races. This is what happens when humans from all walks of life are thrown together in a giant anonymous virtual world. No matter our ages or races or religions in real life, we are all still just people with a personality and a passion. Stereotypes exist in this world for a reason; majority rules. Statistics, however unfair they may be, show where the majority lies.
There are all kinds of people in this world, but unfortunately, Sesame Street was wrong in telling us we are all quite unique. Sure, maybe I have a mole somewhere no one else I know has one. But that’s not being unique. No one, not even the certifiably insane, is unique. Existing throughout the natural world are patterns and systems of equilibrium, one thing to balance another, a set of pre-determined guidelines to follow. The same is true for all things natural, including humans.
For every aggressive, hot-headed woman, there’s a girl in the corner with downcast lashes. We are animals, ruled by emotion and instinct, driven by hunger and fear. What we hunger for or what we fear does not matter in the grand scheme of things.
Knowing this, it is easy to see the patterns in WoW players. There are those who are aggressive and competitive, who yearn for power and fear being weak. There are those who desire joy and laughter and fear boredom and monotony. There are those who want nothing more than to be accepted by a group of people, and who fear being cast from that group. And there are those who desire to learn, who fear ignorance. There are those folks who, seeing a challenge, would rise to it; there are also those who would turn and find the easier path to their goal.
In WoW, as in this world, there is no right or wrong in these passions or these fears. There is only our own individual failure to see or understand another’s desires, and our own instinct to fear and dislike that which is different. It is only natural to find the opposite personality of yourself and misunderstand it, dislike it, or even insult it. It is also natural to feel intrigued, or even humbled by another’s seemingly odd pursuit.
The key to an enjoyable experience, in life as in WoW, is respect.
You do not have to understand every ounce of an idea to respect it. You do not have to know a person in depth to respect them. You do not have to love yourself to respect yourself. All you have to do is realize the differences and accept that they exist. You can despise an idea and still show it respect. The minute this respect is lost, conversation goes from informative and engaging to indecent and insulting.
I cannot speak for everyone, but when I receive derogatory comments of any sort, my mind decides the conversation is not worth my time. Not because I’m angry or bullheaded, but because without respect, there is no knowledge. Those who disrespect me do not keep mine.
However, this is not right of me. Regardless of how one shows their passion, that passion must still be respected. Therefore, I apologize for my lack of respect for those of you who have disrespected me. I have said many things, some in passing, some as entire rants – little insults or quips or tirades – that have been disrespectful. For those things, I want to apologize. It was not right of me, and I will be more conscious from now on of my emotional outbursts.
I do not wish to be on one side or the other of some unintelligible war. I am one of those souls bound to desire knowledge and thirst for personal improvement, the one that wants to test ideas and discover new ones. I also have a desire to excel in what I put effort into. But I refuse to be one of those people who, regardless of others, shoves her own beliefs and desires in the faces of others and claims righteousness.
If you wish to read this blog, to discuss its contents logically and respectfully and to give insight or advice, please continue to do so. If you wish to berate me for my attempts at following my own passions, it is your choice. Just remember that even in anonymity, we are all human beings. And all human beings desire acceptance from others, as well as appreciation for what we do, and of course, that ever-important thing called Respect.
Much love,
Nassira
