Oh My!

I have NOT been keeping up.

I’ve been sick for almost a week now. It’s been pretty miserable. Not to mention that I’m snowed in with three feet of white, powdery flakes of death.

Let me share with you what I’ve been up to!

Firstly, because of my illness, I’ve only been able to play WoW recently, as sitting up was kind of a difficulty. However, in these last few days, I’ve leveled my Paladin up to 77 (almost 78!) and gone Prot for good. I’ve been tanking randoms with and without guildies, and so far it’s gone quite well. I’m really enjoying seeing this new side of WoW. It’s keeping me interested in the game in an unexpected way.

I’ve also gotten to raid ICC a few times! =D Mostly just 10-mans on off-nights, as our guild could use a few more quality DPS players for the 25’s. It has been FUN. I’m enjoying ICC so much more than ToC. My favorite fight so far is Deathbringer Saurfang. Personally, I think it’s more fun in 10s than 25s, which is usually not what I end up saying. I also think it’s more challenging in 10-man.

Excitingly, I’ve gotten many gear upgrades since my little break, and am back to “At Least I’m Not a Total Scrub” status. As of last week, I’m “Epic” from the achievement. Yup. Didn’t have it until last week, due to my two 200 lvl trinkets I’ve been unable to rid myself of.

And last but not least, in approximately 10 minutes, Nassira is going under the knife.

She’s going to be an Orc.

Finally. =D

And we all know what that means:

TIME FOR NEW SITE GRAPHICS!

Leveling as Marksmanship

So many people have asked questions about leveling as Marksmanship that I thought it would be wise to do a post regarding just that: How to Level as a Marksman.

Firstly, it’s not nearly as difficult as you might be thinking. I’ve leveled as Marksman from day 1 on serveral different characters, and I can tell you that the problems you encounter will be just like the problems you’d encounter leveling as Beast Mastery or Survival, with a few slight differences here and there. Nope.

We’ll begin by discussing how to spec Marksman for leveling. I like to keep things simple – choose the talents you think will help you the most. Up until level 80, you don’t need to concern yourself with the highest DPS or the most maxed out gear. All you need to do is kill, kill, kill until you ding that final level. With this in mind, speccing MM at low levels should be intuitive. For example:

If your goal is to get to Chimera Shot as soon as it’s possible to do so, then you should go for talents that are strictly in the Marksman tree.

Here’s an example of a path to follow until your 51st talent point:

This Spec goes straight into Chimera, bringing in Mana-enhancing talents that will help you level efficiently, and a few survivability talents, as well. After you reach this point, you can flesh things out however you’d like.

If you don’t mind getting it a few levels later, throw your points around to what works best for your leveling situation.

Here’s an Example of a 51-point spec that will bring more survivability to your leveling experience.

Don't even try.If your plan is to spec so that you never need to respec even into raiding, give up on that idea – by the time you hit 80, chances are something will have changed, and you’ll end up respeccing anyway. From my experience, respeccing regularly is something you can’t avoid, and don’t really want to avoid. I find myself respeccing at least once every two weeks for some reason or another. No worries. So if you want to level by slowly building your final Raiding spec, by all means do so, but don’t expect to be keeping that spec for very long afterward.

With that in mind, here are a few things you need to focus on:

1. Trapping Skills

You will be able to level much more efficiently as Marksmanship if you can control more than one mob at a time, and Freezing Trap will do this. Make sure you consider Piercing Shots – the above 51-point talent trees don’t include Piercing Shots for this very reason. The bleed will cause your trap to break, and unlike Serpent Sting, which you can cancel out with Scorpid Sting, you can’t get rid of the Piercing Shots bleed effect.

2. Pet Control

Just like leveling as Beast Mastery, you want the mobs’ focus to be on your pet and not yourself. The best way to do this as Marksmanship is to pay close attention. Download Omen threat meters and select the option of having it show while you and your pet are alone together so that you can see exactly when you’re about to pull aggro from your pet. Until you get Feign Death, you will have to be extra careful and make sure you tone things down if your threat begins to pass your pet’s. You can do this by either continuing only Auto Shot, or you can lose your target/turn off Auto Shot altogether and stop attacking until your pet has gained more aggro. When you get Misdirect at level 70, you should also use that tool on your pet to keep mobs on him, and it’s especially useful for bringing multiple mobs to him at one time.

3. Kiting Skills

Learn it.Kiting is an integral part of leveling. What is Kiting? Kiting is a playstyle in which you slow, stun, or trap your mob so that you can move freely without the mob coming within melee range of you. Without being able to kite properly, you’ll find yourself in some sticky situations. I suggest finding a mob that is a few levels lower than yourself that does not stun or DoT you in any way, and practice on it. Continue practicing your kiting until you’re confident that you can kite most mobs without being hit by them. This way, even if you do pull aggro from your pet, or if your pet dies, you will be able to kill the mob without it reaching you. For tips on how to kite, please read my recent page on Keybinds, or try OutDPS Kiting Guide.

Now that we’ve covered the most basic parts of leveling a hunter, we can move on to Pet selection by Race. Generally, Tenacity pets will be your best tanking pets, although in my experience, all pets (when used properly) can be decent leveling tanks. Below is a list of Tenacity pets which Marksman hunters can use for leveling without going too far out of their way. The following are all available at level 10.

Alliance:

Teldrassil (Darkshore only) - Thistle Cub (Bear), Pygmy Tide Crawler (Crab)

Azuremyst Isle – Barbed Crawler (Crab)

Dun Morogh – Ice Claw Bear (Bear), Elder Crag Boar (Boar), Scarred Crag Boar (Boar)

Elwynn Forest – Young Forest Bear (Bear), Longsnout (Boar), Rockhide Boar (Boar), Stonetusk Boar (Boar), Princess (Boar)

Horde:

Eversong Woods – Lake Snapper (Turtle)

Durotar – 2 Boars, 3 Crabs, 1 Crosilisk, 3 Scorpids

Mulgore – None: Must travel to Durotar or wait for level 11 to tame Corrupted Dreadmaw Crosilisk.

Tirisfal Glades – None: Must wait for level 11 to tame Ferocious Grizzled Bear in Silverpine Forest.

As I stated previously, most pets will do just fine being your personal body guard as long as you learn to work with them. I leveled with Eidan (Cat) from level 26 until level 70, and leveled him with me up until 80 along with a Gorilla (Spanks) and a Hyena (Taleisin). If you want a special pet, I recommend visiting Mania’s amazing Petopia website and finding the perfect pet for you. Maybe one of your lvl80 friends will help you get to where you need to go. =)

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s go over a few more things.

MANA: Mana can be a big issue for leveling Marksman hunters, and remember that when you do get Apsect of the Viper, regenerating mana will add to your threat. Keep that in mind while in groups or leveling with your pet.

GEAR: Not all gear is hunter gear (please don’t roll on cloth gear), and up until level 70, you should be rolling equally against all specs of Hunter, because that extra 3 Intellect really Please.isn’t important enough to fight over, even if it is more beneficial for you. As I said, my advice to you is just to Kill! until 80. Then you can focus on beefing up your stats. Especially with all the recent changes to leveling, you should be able to cruise through levels even without decent gear. At this point, going through great pains to get the best gear for your level will most likely be a mistake, as the gear will be replaced in a day or two anyway. Once you hit 70, you can begin to find better gear for yourself so that starting Heroics will be easier. I recommend finishing long Chain Quests to get nice blue items.

QUESTS: Most quests are now solo-able and you shouldn’t have to worry about finding groups for them. Even if you think something is too high of a level for you, give it a try and you may be surprised at what you find out. It will also improve your skills if you attempt to do quests that are 1-3 levels higher, and I definitely recommend it if you want to prepare for upper-level instances and PvP. There might even be cake in it for you.  ;-)

Again, leveling as Marksmanship really isn’t too bad, and is incredibly similar to leveling as one of the other two specs. If you intend to raid as a Marksman, leveling as Marks will give you more experience with your abilities and playstyle, and I think it’s one of the best ways to learn about your spec.

Happy Hunting!

Poor Attendance Leads to One More Level

<Explicit> hopped into Ulduar late last night with only 22 people. We were able to take out the Cat Lady, but Hodir just wasn’t happening, so we called it early.

The good news is that I’ve had some time to level my Paladin! She’s now level 61, officially my highest alt ever. I plan to get her to 80 before the next major patch comes out, hopefully before then if I can find the time (and maybe some run-thrus) for Northrend quests.

If your main character is a hunter, I highly recommend Paladin for an alt. The mechanics of a Paladin are very interesting (and fun, imo), and Ret is a lot like being a Marksman hunter by way of rotation similarity. It’s just different enough to be a neat little change, and the fact that you can be all three Raid roles with one character is VERY appealing to me as someone who has always been purely DPS. I intend to tank with my Paladin and have been studying basics and theories over at Elitist Jerks in preparation.

Leveling as Ret has been incredibly fast. This weekend, I went from 51 to 60, and I didn’t play non-stop either. In case you didn’t know, I despise leveling, and so it always goes quite slowly for me. Having the special 10% XP pauldrons helps, I’m sure, and so does having the Heirloom axe.

The interesting thing for me concerning Paladins is their likeness to Hunters by way of spell/physical combination. Nowadays, we Marksman hunters are doing much more spell damage and focusing intently on mana efficiency. Currently, about 62% of my damage is physical and the rest is Nature and Arcane. Ret pallies are similar in that they do constant physical damage but rely on spell damage, or at least mana, for the bigger numbers. Who would’ve known that two classes so seemingly different could be so similar? I always thought Hunters were alone in their strange hybrid nature, but it’s not so. Pallies and Enhancement Shaman are also in a similar category. The difference in hunters, of course, is the fact that we’re a ranged DPS class, and all other ranged DPS classes do purely spell damage, while we do loads of physical damage as well as spell. I believe we are also the only ranged class that can’t use their main damaging attacks at melee range. QQ

And did I mention we have to shell out Gold for our ranged physical damage? =P But to be fair, Pallies have reagents that they constantly have to purchase, and while they may not be quite as expensive, they do have to pay to play. They just don’t have to pay for their main source of damage.

I never thought I would like Paladin gameplay, but I absolutely love it and I’m looking forward to doing endgame groups with it. If you’re looking for something new, I highly recommend Paladin for the avid hunter. Even if you think you may not like it, it’s worth giving it a try.

Nassira <3's BRK

You probably knew already, but I just finished my interview with BRK. He may be BM, but he’s okay in my book. Click here to listen!

And let me explain one portion! I didn’t get to explain Combat Experience – it’s all about scaling. The more raid buffs you have, the more beneficial Combat Experience will be. If you have Blessing of Kings, Arcane Intellect, and your TSA, you’re going to see more AP (and even some crit) from Combat Experience than you will from Improved Hunter’s Mark. And it’s two points instead of three! Win Win.

That’s all. It was a TON of fun, BRK is pretty cool (but he talks really fast), and I hope you enjoy the podcast.

Raids Naked

Necked Like the Day We Was Born

Necked Like the Day We Was Born

Great screenshot, Wild! That clothing glitch sure has its good parts. >.>

The raid failed miserably due to constant disconnects and wicked lag. So I got drunk and dueled everybody outside Wyrmrest (and somehow got flagged and killed by guards occasionally) and then we decided to make friends with the local Alliance noobs. Getting naked and spamming him with /love and /applaud when he killed something made him feel like a winner, I’m sure. Amazing how poorly a hunter duels when she’s too lagged to kite….but hot damn, it was fun times! We should strip and duel EVERY Lagday. Sometimes we forget that this is a game, and there are infinite ways to enjoy it.

Got any fun screenshots? Guild escapades? Nakid piks (of your character…not you)?! Please, do share.

Very Important Info – Blue Post

Yeah. We saw it coming, but I never imagined this much.

At Last!

/whisper Jailer INVITE ME!!!

/whisper Jailer INVITE ME!!!

Nass is finally level 80. =D  And much to my delight, it was almost immediately time for raid invites. The bug wing was already cleared unfortunately, but we did hit three bosses – Gothik, the Horsemen, and Loatheb. We caught on pretty quickly and had a good night overall, especially for me, since I picked up two new pieces of gear!

Spectral Rider's Girdle

Spectral Rider

Loatheb's Shadow

Loatheb

We also had much fun with Critter Bites, making massive armies of rats and maggots. I made a new friend, too!

One Million Dollars!

One Million Dollars!

Now that I’m 80, the talent testing and spreadsheets will begin again, and I’ll be posting all kinds of marksman analysis crap for you in the weeks to come. One of my first tests is going to be Aimed Shot with the Barrage points and whether or not it’s beneficial in a standard rotation. I have many more things to write about my experience last night, but that will have to wait for tomorrow, for I have “work” to do today.

Freedom Isn't Free – It's Actually 1,000 Gold.

This weekend was a successful one. Not only did I go from level 74 to level 79, but I am now officially free once more.

Free at last!

Free at last!

If it weren’t for the blessed wonders of Wowhead, I would never have known all about the Big Tongues and the Puppy Men. I chose to ally myself with the Mosswalkers and fight off the mean old Puppy Men (I am nobody’s slave, thank you very much!). That, and the trinket looks delicious. I highly recommend the quest chain. And wow, do I love that daily where you turn into a big metal cat! So awesome.

Speaking of great quest chains, I’m currently in the middle of my work for the Sisters of Brunnhildar – I absolutely LOVE being a giant Viking woman. Nothing could have made me happier…or so I thought, until I ended up in the middle of this quest. Never have I had more fun playing this game. The only thing I regret is that I have to get another character to 78 just to do it again. It should be a daily. What a rush! If you haven’t done this chain, DO IT NOW!

The only thing about being a giant Viking woman is that riding mounts is a little…awkward.

Uncomfortable.

Uncomfortable.

I also ran quite a few more instances and hit Friendly with the Argent Crusade, which means I’m one step closer to getting this beauty which in my humble opinion, ignoring the 2 piece bonus, is damn near as good as the Naxx chestpiece. It should suit me until then, and getting rep with the new Tabard system will make it even quicker. There are several 80s in my guild who are already exalted with AT LEAST one Northrend faction.

I leave you today with a list of comparisons of gear, some notes, and a list of available gear almost immediately (or pending Rep) after hitting 80. Hopefully I’ll be able to do some uber heroic runs and Jailer will promote me back from his devious demotions so I can run Naxx with the rest of the little hellions.
