Re: The Switch to ArPen Build

Also titled, “Why the Previous Post Has No Merit”.

After finally getting the chance to go over the two separate fights I was comparing, let me show you exactly why a gain of 500DPS is almost completely unrelated to the changes I made in spec and rotation.

First of all, I was using the only fight I’d done in the same gear – Saurfang.

Let me explain to you how our guild has been running Saurfang: Each hunter kites/kills a beast. This often requires instant high-yield shots, such as Arcane. So I still used Arcane during my post-changes Saurfang fight. Not to mention, there were times when I forgot not to use it in my normal rotation.

Secondly, the first fight was unsuccessful, and because of this, much shorter than the successful post-changes fight. Here are the details:

So you can see here the huge differences in the fights themselves, and also the similarities which actually shouldn’t be there. Just look at the pie chart.

The group makeup was only slightly different each night. Both nights, we only had 24 people (my Marksman self is not included in the following lists).

Group Makeup 1

Assasination/Mutilate Rogue

Survival Hunter x2

Ret Pally

Blood DK

Fury Warrior

Arcane Mage x2

Shadow Priest

Affliction Lock

Feral Druid

Boomkin

Elemental Shaman

Enhance Shaman

Unholy DK

Marksman Hunter

Prot Pally

Prot Warrior

Resto Shaman

Holy Priest

Holy Pally

Resto Druid

Disc Priest

Group Makeup 2

Assasination/Mutilate Rogue

Survival Hunter

MM Hunter x2

Blood DK x2

Fury Warrior

Arms Warrior

Arcane Mage x2

Shadow Priest

Elemental Shaman

Enhancement Shaman

Afflic Lock

Feral Druid

Holy Pally x2

Disc Priest

Holy Priest

Resto Shaman

Prot Warrior

Prot Pally

Resto Druid

So you can see that the two nights are slightly different in makeup. This can account for a number of possible DPS changes.

Thirdly, I know for a fact that my performance with the talent and rotation changes was worse than my performance without them. How do I know? You should always know how well or how poorly you’ve performed in a raid and be honest about it. Sometimes you have good nights, and sometimes you’re just not quite on top of things.

Fourthly, and as Wulf mentioned in a previous comment, I do believe my pet was at mid-range happiness while fighting in the post-changes battle, while in the previous fight, he was very happy. This affects pet damage, and so affects the outcome of the comparison. If I had noticed, and fed Ceallach before the post-changes Saurfang fight, the DPS would’ve been higher.

I also know for a fact that my GUILD’S performance was much better on the post-changes fight than the previous fight. Just the fact that one was a failure and the other a success can prove that. What does this change? This can change any number of things, like for instance, how much target-changing I had to do, or how much movement I had to make to compensate for mistakes. When the guild performs well, it’s easier for me to stand in one place and PewPew.When everything clicks, the fight goes much smoother.

And finally, notice the differences in damage outputs and critical strikes, as well as the number of shots fired.

Because of all of these things, my plan is to dual-spec both particular talents/glyphs, pay more attention to each rotation, and make comparisons which are much more related to one another before coming to any conclusions.

All in all, what’s my point?

ALWAYS DOUBLE-CHECK YOURSELF BEFORE YOU WRECK YOURSELF!

Hunter Discussion #1 – Success!

Well, we’ve finally finished our first round of Hunter Discussion!

We had quite a few people there, and I decided that we should just let everyone talk if they wanted, so long as we weren’t being pushy.

Bear with us – this is our first discussion. =) We talk about glyphs, mana efficiency, Wild Quiver, Improved Steady Shot, and a few other things, including our plans for the new dual-speccing ability.

We did the recording through Ventrilo, so lots of people sound like they’re underwater or have crazy-sounding lisps. I guarantee we all sound perfectly normal IRL. We got an interesting group of people, too : four different accents! Totally awesome. I really enjoyed speaking with all of you! Thanks so much for joining me.

Without further ado, here’s the podcast!

The next hunter discussion will be announced sometime next week. If you liked what you listened to today and think you may want to participate, just send me an email at Dairina321@gmail.com or leave a comment with your email address.

MM with Lock 'n' Load – Why You Shouldn't Do It

A lot of you have been asking me what I think about a Marksman spec diving into the Lock ‘n’ Load talent from SV. While it may seem kind of neat, there are too many reprecussions, too much lost damage to make this talent worth having. Below is a little example.

Lock 'n' Load - NO!

I hope this helps you to see why LnL simply isn’t worth having as a primarily Marksman hunter. When you think of new specs, try to think of it in the way of sacrifice – you only have so many points, so what are you willing to sacrifice for something else? In a game of chess, every piece is an important part of your strategy, and so it is with your talents. But it’s good to get those gears moving, and I commend you on thinking outside the box. Don’t stop trying to find new ways to do things. DO double-think them, share them, and test them.

*Edit*

Now that I have more time, let’s look further into this.

LnL – You have a 100% chance when you trap a target and a 10% chance when you deal periodic damage with your Serpent Sting to cause your next 2 Arcane Shot or Explosive Shot spells to trigger no cooldown, cost no mana and consume no ammo.  30 second cooldown.

Why do I say that Trap Dancing as MM won’t help our damage? Firstly, our traps cost more mana than an SV trap. Secondly, they do significantly less damage than an SV hunter’s trap, because further on in talents, SV gets a boost to trap damage. Thirdly, in the time it takes for us to place the trap, we will most likely either miss a shot cooldown, or miss one or two auto shots, which as Marksman is detrimental. The damage we deal from the trap will most likely not make up our lost shots’ damage.

What you gain – A Free Arcane Shot (2 actually)- it would behave similar to Wild Quiver, consuming no amm0 (soon to be irrelevant) and taking no cooldown.

What you lose – 2% damage on all shots, 7% increased haste, 12% damage on Aimed Shot and Volley, 30 total Attack Power

Why it’s not worth it – Arcane Shot is far from your top damage-dealing shot. If this applied to Chimera, it might actually be worth it (although still doubtful). But thinking in terms of loss vs. gain, you’re losing more damage than an extra Arcane can deal. The reason it’s so beneficial for SV is because it applies to their top-damage shot, and because it’s 100% chance if Trap Dancing, which is actually beneficial in SV. Another reason those points are great in SV is because of the talents they choose later on, which increases damage in tandem with their first few talents.

I hope this further explains the logic behind not choosing LnL. But hey! By all means, please try it out. I could be wrong. You never know ’til you try.

More Tutorials To Look Forward To!

Good morning!

I’ve just created my first tutorial – Setting Up WWS - and hopefully it will help those of you who have never needed to set up their own account and log their own data. There are a few more tutorials I plan on creating to help the community understand more about WWS and Recount, and a few other mods as well.

1. How to Read and Interpret WWS

2. How to Install and Use Recount

3. X-Perl and You – The Simple Explanation

4. Bartender Setup

If there’s anything else you’d like to see put into a tutorial, feel free to let me know and I’ll consider it.

First and foremost, I will be working on these Hunter Discussions. If you have not been contacted yet, please don’t think you have not been signed up. There is a complicated process to go through before we can get the first group together. If you have not yet signed up, please sign up on the appropriate thread here or send me an email at Dairina321@gmail.com.

Thanks for your support and your patience on these discussions. Let’s make them enjoyable! =)

Let's Chat

Hello!

Results are in and quite a few of you took the time to give me your opinions! Thanks for that. A few folks said, “No way, you suck,” a few folks said, “Meh, bring people I like,” but most of you said, “Sure!” so : Let’s do this.

Obviously I can’t bring everyone in all at once, so here’s how this is going to go down. I’m going to throw down some ground rules, and then we’re going to start sign-ups. The rules, at least the test rules, are as follows -

1. Be respectful. If the conversation turns into debate, it can get heated pretty fast, and while nothing is wrong with a heated discussion, you absolutely must be respectful.

2. Be patient. We’re going to have to take turns talking. First, let the person finish saying what they want to say. Second, if you’re talking, don’t be too long winded and give others a chance to speak. Third, DO NOT INTERRUPT. Everyone gets their time at the mic.

3. Try to stay on topic. This is a hunter discussion about hunter things, mainly about Marksmanship things. If you have Survival questions, go speak to Lienna! She knows much more than I do on that subject.

4. Have courage. If I or anyone else in the group says something that you know better of, don’t be afraid to speak up. This is a discussion, not a ruled meeting. We want the truth, or as close as we can get.

5. Come prepared. You need the following –

Ventrilo / Skype (we will decide closer to when the time comes)

Headphones

Microphone

Pre-written questions or comments

If you aren’t prepared, you’re going to take time away from the discussion, or you aren’t going to get to say what you wanted to say.

Now that all the groundrules are laid down, there’s one more thing I have to say before we can start this : If you don’t follow the rules, you will either be asked to comply, or you will be kicked. I will not tolerate asshatery in my vent channel. If you are consistantly interrupting people, being disrespectful, talking about non-WoW-related things…you will be asked to stop, and if you don’t, you will be removed from the group.

Now come the sign-ups! This will be easy. On this thread, and this thread only, please make a comment containing these little bits of information :

1. In-game name, server

3. Email address or blog where you can be contacted

2. Current spec

3. Length of time you’ve played WoW, Hunter in particular

If you don’t feel comfortable putting your info out there, you can always send me an email at Dairina321@gmail.com. Okay? Okay! Let’s do this!!

<3 Nass

P.S. There is a new page on the right-side navigation bar called Tutorial – Setting Up WWS. This is a short tutorial to show you how to get WWS set up and start using it. It was requested by a few folks, so I hope you enjoy, and as always, please let me know if I missed anything.

Hunter Discussion Group

Mornin’.

Last night, I had a Skype call with a fellow hunter who had a few questions on being MM.

It went rather well, he was an awfully nice guy, and we both got a chance to talk WoW, which is always enjoyable. So I started thinking…typing can only get you so far, and waiting several hours for a response can be kind of a pain. While blogs have their strong points, vocal discussions bring an entirely new element to Theorycraft.

What do you think about having small Hunter Discussions, maybe an hour or so in a night, where a few people who sign up can bring a list of questions or help to answer questions in a group environment? Skype is free and easy to set up, and I believe you can do conference calls, although I’ll have to double-check. If Skype won’t work, there’s always Ventrilo. =)

Is this something you as readers might like to participate in or possibly hear feedback from?

[polldaddy poll=1325411]

If the results are positive, I’ll set up a few guidelines and start taking sign-ups. Thanks,

Beaten with a Dead Horse Stick? I Thought it was Beat a Dead Horse with a Stick…

Redundancy.

It happens. It happens.

It’s that time again – the “I’ve Run This Raid One Too Many Times” feeling is creeping into my veins. When things start getting fast, it feels automatic, and when it feels automatic, people start causing trouble. There’s nothing more dangerous to a raid than friends goofing off. There’s also nothing funnier as long as it’s not that disruptive. So, if like me you are itching for some action, here’s a list of things NOT to do during your raid or instance that may seem like good fun, but actually suck (Tulmok).

1. Corpse-exploding everyone, even after combat, including the dead boss when it’s time to loot.

2. Placing a Death Gate on top of said Exploded-corpse Boss when your master looter is a Death Knight.

3. Opening Portals to Stonard while making people think it’s bisquits.

4. Casting Path of Frost or Water Walking on someone who is making the mile-long jump to the next portion of the instance.

5. Spinning in circles to make yourself dizzy before a fight.

6. Meleeing/Ranging when you’re actually Ranged/Melee. Or just unequipping your weapon and punching things.

7. Creating your own channel to tell Your Momma Jokes, and creating new jokes instead of fighting.

8. After Thaddius, having a Face-Off with the opposite charge to see who can loot without dying.

9. Misdirecting your mind-controlled friends onto your other friends.

10. Casting those Moonglow stones near to touching all over the playing field. (I’m serious – stop doing that)

And last but not least – Teabagging your friends instead of rezzing them.

Remember – DISRUPTIVE! DO NOT DO! (more than once)

Spec Competition, Phat Loots, and Malygos' Beard

In all the hubbub of Patch 3.0.8, many hunters have swapped over to the new Survival. While I don’t have an issue with this, I would like to say that you must expect a learning curve with it. Unless you’re very quick on the uptake and learn new strats like Speedy Gonzalas, don’t expect instant results. If you’re going to switch specs, stick with it until you see generous improvement.

If you ARE Speedy Gonzalas, congratulations! Survival is doing a considerable amount of damage, and as much as I wish MM had gotten buffed, Survival is now in the spotlight. If your ultimate goal is to master the spec which yeilds the most damage available in most situations, Survival is the new BM. One of our MM hunters switched to Survival a few days ago, and has suddenly shot up three or four damage spots on Recount, as well as matches or surpasses my DPS on some bosses. Her gear is minimally better, her computer slower – therefore, her DPS could be surpassing my own by a generous amount with some more practice and a better connection. Perhaps you’ll find that while you didn’t quite grasp MM, you’re very adept at the strats for SV.

If you don’t like the idea of SV, or don’t like change in general, you can still be useful with the other specs. Just don’t expect to be competing for the top of the charts unless the skill and gear of those you play with is lesser than your own. Arcane mages are destroying things like it’s child’s play, Death Knights are still incredibly powerful, and Rogues aren’t to be discredited. But remember – it’s not all about top damage. Do what you enjoy doing, be a joy to have in group, know your strats and techniques, do your best on damage, and you’ll always be a valuable player.

On a lighter note, I got some gear upgrades last night! Betrayer dropped, but it went to our DK. Luckily for me, Journey’s End dropped, too. Not the best, but definitely an upgrade from my Wraith Spear. I also picked up my tier 7.5 chest piece, a slight upgrade from Heroic, but the second-best in slot. Best if you have the 2-piece set bonus, imo. I’d suggest the shoulders and the chest, but the other tier pieces aren’t worth it in my humble opinion.

Last night, <Explicit> one-shotted the remaining bosses in Naxx25 and moved on to our first real Malygos attempts.

First, let me start by saying that we have a great group of talented players, most of whom are respectful, fun, and intelligent. Maturity may be lacking in some cases, but respectfulness tends to outweigh the issues caused by it. That being said, there are still those who struggle with certain issues, be it poor computers, schedule inconsitancies, health problems, or wife aggro. Every dog has his day, but mostly he’s just a dog. And we’re just people, playing this game we love. We can’t run away from bad days, or even bad weeks in which nothing is accomplished. The battlegroup issue was horrendous.

Being able to play again has raised spirits exponentially, and our speedy disposal of Naxx bosses has boosted our confidence. However, sometimes our assessment of skills makes us forget that we are still only as good as our gear permits. Suffice it to say, we must clear Naxx many more times before we’re ready to down Malygos. And now, after the battlegroup issues, we are three weeks behind schedule. What do we say to that? Bring it on. In a few weeks’ time, we’re going to shave that damn beard right off the dragon. Oh, the imagery!
